On 22 June 2019, H.E. Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, chaired the ASEAN Leaders’ Interfaces with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN Youth, and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) during the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok. These interface sessions promote a people-centred ASEAN Community that leaves no one behind and looks to the future.

Interface with AIPA – The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of Parliament, as the representative of the people, and its role in communicating with the public to foster partnerships in pushing forward the goals of the ASEAN Community and promoting cooperation to harmonise ASEAN Member States’ laws to support closer regional integration. At the meeting, Mr. Chuan Leekpai, President of the Thai Parliament, as President of AIPA, expressed his support for cooperation between ASEAN and AIPA to address various challenges for the benefit of all ASEAN peoples. During the interface, both sides supported continued interaction between the ASEAN Secretariat and the AIPA Secretariat to enhance cooperation between the legislative and executive branches. In addition, the Prime Minister encouraged making use of discussions during the 40th AIPA General Assembly this August in Bangkok to consider ways to enhance cooperation between ASEAN and AIPA to build awareness and inclusiveness in a concrete manner to address issues of common concern such as marine debris for the benefit of ASEAN peoples.

Interface with ASEAN Youth – The Prime Minister encoraged the youth of ASEAN to become leading agents of constructive change with a sense of social responsibility and to be well-prepared in today’s fast moving, technology-driven, and borderless world.  The representative of ASEAN Youth,  Ms. Pin-anong Weesapen, a first year student at Mahidol University, proposed recommendations on issues such as education, environment, and socio-economic development. The youth representative also proposed concrete and sustainable solutions by applying technology and innovation, using online platforms responsibly, and participating in the political decision-making process. In this regard,  H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia, encouraged the youth to develop the necessary skills in preparation for the 4th Industrial Revolution, learn to think out-of-the-box, and become leading advocates of peace and security.  H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of Myanmar, also encouraged the ASEAN youth to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Interface with ASEANBAC – The Prime Minister prioritised inclusive and sustainable economic growth to address the 4th Industrial Revolution and Digital Economy. This includes promotion of human resources development, MSMEs, digital trade connectivity as well as strengthening the multilateral trading system through the conclusion of RCEP negotiations in 2019.  In this regard, Mr. Arin Jira, Chairman of ASEAN-BAC, agreed with ASEAN Leaders on the need to address the rapid technological changes. He also suggested cooperation between ASEAN Member States via ASEAN-BAC’s initiative this year, “AHEAD 4.0 (ASEAN Human Empowerment And Development Towards 4.0)”, which will enhance human development and further promote regional trade and investment.

The ASEAN Leaders’ interfaces with stakeholders reflected the ASEAN Leaders’ commitment to enhancing a truly inclusive and people centred ASEAN Community in accordance with Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”.
