307

On 6- 7 June 2019, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in collaboration with Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Energy hosted ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) Roundtable Meeting and Conference at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC). The said meeting was participated by the representatives from over 20 cities in ASEAN.

Dr.Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Digital Economy and Society, stated that smart city development has become an important global agenda especially in its capacity to improve the economy and society. Thailand puts emphasis on its smart city initiatives as a leading country in this field. During the Handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship Ceremony last year in Singapore, Thai Prime Minister stressed that Thailand will continue the good work on those issues to which ASEAN has given priority over the past year. Among them is the ASCN. The ASCN Roundtable Meeting and Conference also emphasised the importance of sustainability and inclusiveness to embody the spirit of Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability.”

ASCN Roundtable Meeting’s objective is to update the status of smart cities development in each member country, exchange views on the draft ASCN Term of Reference and Monitoring & Evaluation Framework as well as the proposed membership expansion criteria. The said documents are expected to be adopted at the 2nd ASCN Annual Meeting in August 2019 before presenting to ASEAN Leaders for notation during the 35th ASEAN Summit in November this year. These documents will serve as a set of guidelines for the future collaboration of ASCN.

Dr. Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin, President/CEO of Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) stated that ASCN was initiated by Singapore last year. Its objective was to use technology and innovation to promote smart city development with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for people in ASEAN. The meeting tried to tackle key issues resulting from the drastic urban expansion such as congestion, urban-rural inequality, and public safety. At present, there are 26 pilot cities joining the ASCN. Beside the discussion, there were exhibition and presentation on theme of “the Smart and Sustaiable City” by the spearkers from the public and private sector.
