ASEAN Smart Cities Network Conference and Exhibition

333

On 22-24 August 2019, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in collaboration with Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Energy of Thailand hosted ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) Conference and Exhibition in Bangkok, which included the 2nd ASCN Annual Meeting, the seminar, and the exhibition.  The said meeting was participated by the National Representatives (NRs) and the Chief Smart City Officers (CSCOs) from 26 cities in ASEAN.  G20 countries, including USA, China, Japan, and ROK, also attended to share their experience and best practices on smart city development, following on the initiative proposed by the Prime Minister of Thailand at the G20 Summit in Osaka in June.

H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated in his opening remarks that the objective of ASCN was to use technology and innovation to address the challenges of rapid urbanization.  As the Chair of ASCN this year, the sustainability and external partnership are strategic value-added dimensions that Thailand has emphasized, which is inline with Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”.

The ASCN was one of the key initiatives that the Prime Minister of Thailand invited G20 countries to join.  The others include financial inclusion, marine debris/ environment, and human capital development. The interactions between the ASCN and external partners, in particular the G20 Members, will help promote cooperation in areas such as “connecting the connectivities,” which is one of the cooperation areas identified in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) which was adopted by the ASEAN Leaders at the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok in June 2019.

The annual report and the outcome document of the meeting, the Terms of Reference for ASCN, will be submitted for the notation by the ASEAN Leaders at the 35th ASEN Summit in November this year.
