ASEAN-New Zealand Ministerial Meeting

 

On 31 July 2019, H.E. Mr. Prak  Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia, and Right Honourable Winston Peters, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, co-chaired the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with New Zealand during the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting/ Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs) in Bangkok.

New Zealand expressed appreciation for ASEAN’s Statement issued after the mass shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March 2019, and was pleased with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific adopted by ASEAN Leaders. Both sides noted that the current ASEAN – New Zealand Plan of Action had been implemented by 98 percent and supported the drafting of a new Plan of Action for 2021 – 2025. In addition, the Ministers looked forward to celebrating the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue Relations next year.

ASEAN thanked New Zealand for supporting the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), and for providing annual scholarships for ASEAN students. Both sides also discussed issues of cooperation on air transport to enhance connectivity, the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANFTA) and cyber security.

New Zealand became ASEAN’s Dialogue Partner in 1975.  At the ASEAN-New Zealand 40th Anniversary Commemorative Summit held on 22 November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, both sides agreed to elevate their relations to a strategic partnership and endorsed the Plan of Action to Implement the Joint Statement for ASEAN-New Zealand Strategic Partnership 2016-2020 which highlighted people strategy and prosperity strategy, to strengthen people-to-people linkages and economic cooperation between the two sides.

Cambodia is currently the country coordinator for ASEAN – New Zealand Dialogue Relations until 2021.
