H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom Thailand, will chair the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat on 17 – 18 January 2019 at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai. The Meeting is the first ASEAN ministerial gathering under Thailand’s Chairmanship in 2019 which will play an important role in laying the foundation to take forward Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship priorities for the rest of the year.

The Thai Foreign Minister will brief ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the Secretary- General of ASEAN on the Thai priorities under the ASEAN Chairmanship theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”. “Advancing” means to be future-oriented and better prepared for the future by making use of the technological advances from the Fourth Industrial Revolution, while building immunities against disruptive technologies. “Partnership” means to strengthen partnership at all levels and enhance connectivity to realise a seamless ASEAN that is linked to other regions through the region including “connecting the connectivities” and closer people to people ties and ASEAN identity. “Sustainability” means to promote sustainability in all dimensions, including sustainable development cooperation, so that we can realise “sustainable ASEAN”.

H.E. Foreign Minister will also take this opportunity to invite ASEAN to attend various high-level meetings that will take forward the sustainability agenda to be held in Thailand in 2019, such as, the Special ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Marine Debris on 5 March 2019; Special ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Illegal Wildlife Trade on 21 March 2019; ASEAN high level meeting on human capital development and inception workshop on connecting IUU fishery in ASEAN.

Furthermore, a number of issues of common concern are expected to be discussed including ASEAN Community – building strategy, ASEAN centrality in the regional architecture and ASEAN relations with external partners. The Ministers will also discuss regional and international developments.
