ASEAN Enhances Its Role on the Situation in Rakhine State

Following endorsement at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Chiang Mai on 17-18 January 2019, a Preliminary Needs Assessment Mission of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) was sent to Rakhine State, Myanmar, on 4 March 2019. The Preliminary Mission is drawn from the ASEAN-Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ASEAN-ERAT) comprising experts from several ASEAN Member States, including Thailand, and officials of the AHA Centre and the ASEAN Secretariat. It is the first ever mission of ASEAN to Rakhine State, Myanmar.

The overall goal of the Preliminary Mission is to conduct a preliminary needs assessment to support the Myanmar Government in its efforts regarding the repatriation process. Once the Preliminary Mission is completed this month, the results will be assessed by ASEAN with the view to sending a Comprehensive Needs Assessment Mission at a later stage.
