On 1 August 2019, H.E. U Kyaw Tin, Union Minister for International Cooperation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, co-chaired the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with Canada during the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting/ Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs) in Bangkok.

The Meeting exchanged views on the status of ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Relations. Both sides highlighted their cooperation in cyber security and sustainable development. On economic matters, the Ministers noted the existing collaboration on trade and investment promotion and encouraged further   cooperation on capacity-building for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). ASEAN expressed appreciation for Canada’s scholarships awarded to students from ASEAN countries, which will contribute to building a solid foundation for people-to-people ties. Both sides will explore the possibility of working together on developing smart cities, connectivity and border management. Canada welcomed the proposal to cooperate with ASEAN on promoting the role of women in peace and security.

The Dialogue Relations between ASEAN and Canada were established in 1977. Canada acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2010 and is one of the top ten trading partners of ASEAN. Myanmar is currently the Country Coordinator for ASEAN-Canada relations.
